La Porte du Ciel
The Blue Peafowl
The Blue Peafowl, originating from the Indian sub-continent, has become a domestic bird throughout the world because of the magnificence of its plumage.
It is a large galliform species measuring nearly one metre, from head to tail, and two to three times more with its long train of upper tail coverts.
Although it can fly fairly well, in the event of serious threat, it normally prefers to flee on foot by walking, running and jumping.
It is the male which has the most beautiful plumage, of an iridescent blue, with a characteristic crest and also a long train of gleaming, ocellated feathers which it majestically deploys into an extraordinary fan. This behaviour is primarily a sexual parade but it can also serve as an intimidating posture for a rival. The female has duller feathers, grey-brown, without any long upper tail coverts.
As for its “song” or better “call”, the peacock’s is not worthy of its plumage! It is the famous loud and strident “Leon”, which the English transpose into “Mow”!
Its diet is varied, consisting not only of seeds and fruit, but also of insects and small reptiles.
